We must also here be guided by our knowledge of other ancient Near Eastern literature, and a little common sense, which require among other things that we recognize “historicity” as a modem concept and acknowledge that it is not culturally relevant in ancient Near Eastern societies–largely because informed access to the past was not possible and had no useful function.”
